Ageism and Seniors

April 1, 2019

The definition of Ageism is: prejudice or discrimination on the basis of a person’s age. It’s hard to understand why someone would think less of a person because of their age. Senior adults are amazing people with so much wisdom and a lot to contribute to society. Here are a few things to think about if you find yourself as a victim of ageism:

  • Think before you respond. One of the benefits of getting older is realizing that no everything needs your comment! It’s important to discern whether or not a response will make the situation worse or better. You can’t control other people, you can only control you.
  • Speak up for yourself. If you decide the situation is worth addressing, find the courage to speak up for yourself. Prejudice is birthed out of the fear of the unknown. Perhaps a simple explanation of who you are and what you are capable of can change the situation.
  • Don’t forget to remember who you are. It’s easy to let the opinions of others influence the value you put on yourself. The truth is, you are an amazing human being with wonderful things left to give to others.
